Our Assessment: The Model 1873 'Trapdoor' Springfield was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army and it and the Model 1884 and 1888 Trapdoors were the main service rifles of the U.S. Military until they were gradually replaced by the Springfield Model 1892 bolt-action rifle. George Custer’s troops were armed with them at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and they were still used by secondary units during the Spanish-American war in 1898. The Model 1879 was not an official model, but came about to make collecting rifles easier. The differences between the Model 1879 and 1873 models were a longer comb and a thicker receiver with a low arched breechblock. This trapdoor rifle was made in 1884. It has the correct M1879 Buckhorn rear sight and 10 ½” comb. The rifle has about 75% of its original finish remaining and is in about Fine Plus overall condition. There is still case coloring visible on the breechblock and upper tang. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and a single spot of moderate erosion in one of the lands near the muzzle. This rifle comes with the correct cleaning rod, socket bayonet and a period correct vintage leather sling, to complete the package for the discerning collector.
