It would appear you have a first generation black powder SAA. The grips are probably not stock. The originals should either be wood, or hard rubber. The 30th edition of The Blue Book of Gun Values puts serial numbers starting with 54,000 to 130,000 as being manufactured from 1876 to 1880. All lettering on the weapon should be block stamped and on a civilian model the only serial number is on the butt. The nickel plated revolver commands about a 30% less value from other finishes. Have it appraised and inspected by someone who is reputable and knows their stuff. You can also pay to have Colt provide a history of the revolver for a fee. Like most others on this site I'm only passing information I've found in a book and without actually looking at the real deal. Get it appraised, store it in a gun safe and insure it. If it is in fact a 1st generation SAA, is in good working order and with all original parts from that era the values can go from $3500 and up. Of course if this is too much stress on you around Christmas time you can always give it to me.
