This book was written before lean came into picture as a concept that can be applied and reaped by larger audience and TOC was established in mid 60's but it was not put up in easy to understand perspective and was in form of journals and papers but this book made it common sense for common man and was pushed by American Manufacturers to their employees, which helped them to define new way of cost measuring and defining the competitive priorities in context to their strategic goals. Secondly the advancement of SPC (Statically Process Control) and Lean puts greater emphasis on TOC, and till now this book has been prescribed by many academia to students for understanding of Lean, Six Sigma, Agile etc.

It is hard for me to find the right tone to review this book, perhaps I'll open by saying that of all the business books I've read this remains the most approachable, and possibly also the best value for money once the case studies in the interview with the author at the end of the book are taken into account.
Really it is built around a very simple insight - that the speed of a convoy is determined by the slowest ship, what the book does is demonstrate the effect of consistently applying this in...more

Great explanation of the theory of constraints and operations management. It's a business classic- first published in 1984 - but still relevant as it gets at the fundamentals. I almost removed a star for trying to create a fictional story to tell the book in that was badly told/edited. Did we really need the side story about the protagonists marital issues?
One of the biggest takeaways from this book is that it's incredibly important to set the right goals to manage a complex operation. This soun...more

Recommends it for: all industrial engineers and process managers
The best process improvement novel I've seen, this classic work explains the all-important Theory of Constraints through real life examples and a surprisingly good story. Most books of this nature are exceptionally unrealistic, but this one manages to keep the reader engaged, which is key for an instructional text like this.
The book's lessons have some practicality in normal, everyday life, but its greatest utility is for those involved in process improvement in industries such as manufacturing,...more

This is to Systems Thinking what The Five Dysfunctions is to management: A peachy piece of fiction, packed with applicable lessons in the most enjoyable format you can imagine. While other systems thinking books are somewhat dry, this one is filled with life, even romance, and well-grounded in reality. While five stars normally for me would mean 'life-changing,' in this case I can't resist because of a rare and wonderful balance between enjoyment, levity, and insight. 2nd read-through: I still love this book. Primarily because of its collaborative solution finding process and its vocalness against local optima. Also from a didactic perspective I think this is something we (as people leading teams) should strive for: Enabling peers to make better decisions by themselves via good process.
The references in 'The Phoenix Project' pushed me towards reading this one as well. I really enjoyed listening to the audible...more

Goldratt introduces the Theory of Constraints via this entertaining novel. I think this book is excellent if you are new to Operations. And I think the approach of telling a story rather reading a traditional text book is a good format.
It demonstrates why many traditional measurements and common intuition is wrong. The book revisits what the goal of a business should be and what is important to measure and control to achieve that goal. Through examples in the main character's personal life and...more

I like the approach of 'discovering' the principles behind theory of constraints and how to optimize throughput through a repeatable manufacturing process. Seems quite practical and valuable in just that application.

The Goal, authored by Israeli business management guru, Eliyahu Goldratt, is perhaps the first of its kind in the business-fiction genre (if there was ever one). The novel gives the reader basic principles which can not only be used to effectively manage a manufacturing company by striving towards continuous improvement but also to effectively manage one’s life.
According to the author, The Goal, is about science and education, two words that have lost the kernel of their meaning in the plethora...more

This book is fantastic. Not only does it introduce the Theory of Constraints, but does it so as if ToC was invented by the main characters themselves: Revealing the reasoning behind the theory, unfolding each step in a logical progression, highlighting the pitfalls and finally crystallizing the method.
Truly genius.
It is a Fantastic book, full of wisdom and knowledge. For all Industrial Engineers and those who are interested in management trust me and read it :)
I did a bad thing and didn't realize that this was a library book that was supposed to be sent along to them six months ago...so I read it in a weekend and dropped it off on Monday.
It's a good example tale of a problematic plant and how the manager turned it around using what was then different measurements of success (which are now much more standard today). It was mentioned in one of my business classes as a good story example of changing and coming to conclusions about what's working and what...more
I wanted to love this book. I very nearly loved this book. Unfortunately, I read 'The Phoenix Project' first.
I keep flipping between 3 and 4 stars for this. The book deserves 5 for its place in business history, and I flip to 4 for it because it will communicate on a general-purpose level far better than a book like 'Phoenix.'

At first, I was not sure if this book is my cup of tea, and I got a bit tired of the 'here's your all knowing mentor approach' every other author seems to take, maybe reading too many business novels in a row. Literally surprised at how original the book is nearly after 30 years of publication. I feel this is the story of my factory, like the millions across the globe have felt. This is one of those revolutionary books that took the manufacturing and mangement world by storm. A seminal work credited for inspiring the genre of 'leadership novels', including some of my fav's 'The Phoenix Project' (IT flavor) and 'The Five Dysfunctions of a Team'. This was a very unique, interesting little book. The author has developed 'The Theory of Constraints' (which is a factory that can produce a product only as fast as its slowest bottleneck) and put it in novel form in order to explain it to the average worker. Lots of food for thought.
I see that bottlenecks exist all around us, not just in manufacturing. We move forward in finances, careers, projects, etc. only as fast as our weakest link will allow.
The key is to be able to identify constraints,...more
This one gets super reviews but I'm at best lukewarm about it. It's an early example of the 'teach business principles through a novel' genre. In this case, the bumbling plant manager gets whacked over the head by his Israeli physicist friend until he figures out that flow through his plant is more important that keeping everyone busy. Eliyahu M. Goldratt was an educator, author, physicist, philosopher and business leader, but first and foremost, he was a thinker who provoked others to think. Often characterized as unconventional, stimulating, and “a slayer of sacred cows,” he urged his audience to examine and reassess their business practices with a fresh, new vision.

Busy times call for some workarounds. One of the distinct advantages of audio books over its more physical form is that it saves time. Audio books take away a sliver of fun from the enjoyment of a book, but if the voiceover is well done, it makes up for it.
With the explosion of personal media players like iPods and even mobile phones which can carry media files, even a routine walk can be turned into an education.
Not all books are good for easy listening. Audio books on goal setting and motivation lend themselves well to listening while walking. That’s not to say you can’t enjoy an audio narration of a novel or even a bit of poetry.
The search for audio books may not always get you the title you want. Even then, you can get a few gems when you go searching. So, where do you go searching for free audio books to download and enjoy?
The following ten audio book websites, of course.
Booksshouldbefree
At this address you get free audio books in multiple genres and languages. You can check out the Top 100, drill through the genres, or use the Google search at the top to get the free audio book for download.
Downloads are available in mp3 and iTunes format. The books are mostly classical literature and very well organized with reviews and a small preview. You can also check out the Wikipedia links on the book and the author.
NewFiction
NewFiction.com is one of the better “˜lookers’ in the class of free audio book websites. Perhaps, because it’s about “˜iSoaps’ or fictionalized stories delivered in episodes daily. Stories are voiced by trained dramatic actors for your aural appeal.
You can subscribe to the “˜iSoaps’ and play episodes online, get it as a podcast, or download it to your PC or your portable device (iPod, cell phone etc).
ThoughtAudio
The Giver Audiobook Free Download
ThoughtAudio is a neat little audio book website with a neat collection of classical works. You can listen to them online or download them in segments. You can also view the written text of some of the books as a PDF download.
LibriVox
Our previous thorough reviewGet Free Public Domain Audiobooks From LibriVoxGet Free Public Domain Audiobooks From LibriVoxRead More on LibriVox covers this audio book website. LibriVox is a repository of free audio books in the public domain. It is a volunteer driven site, where enthusiasts record freely available books and make them available as MP3 downloads or podcasts.
You can also volunteer to be a reader, no qualifications other than an audible voice is necessary. You can search through the collection using the catalog search on the site. An advanced search option is also available.
Podiobooks
Podiobooks is a similar episodic audio rendition of free audio books as podcasts. Like lot of podcasts, you can receive them as RSS feeds or download them directly. The number of categories is well covered from alternative history to chick lit and satire. The audio book site has about 434 titles in its stock.
Open Culture
Audio books are just one of the sections covered on this site which focuses on educational media collected from other sites. You get to download free courses from universities in MP3 format, language lessons as podcasts, and a variety of other podcasts that cover subjects like technology, travel, music, science, and more.
Learn Out Loud

All usual genres are well represented. For instance, if you are into self development, you have 425 titles to choose from. All titles are rated and reviewed.
Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg is the ongoing effort to digitize and archive cultural works in the form of eBooks. It also works in co-operation with websites like LibriVox and AudioBooksForFree for creating audio books. As a result, you can browse through their comprehensive list of human and machine read audio books.
You can go through the list alphabetically for author and title. Audio books are also available in a number of languages. But the quicker way would be to use the Advanced Search page.
Storynory
A free audio book site especially for children is a nice little place for classic children stories like “˜A Christmas Carol’, fairy tales “˜Aesop’, educational stories that cover The Bible or history, and lots of other original stuff. You can download a free audio story every week.
Librophile
The interface at first glance appears a bit off-the-wall. Then you realize that it’s a search tool for eBooks. Librophile collects and displays eBooks mostly from LibriVox and Audible. Click on the Free button and then go through the listings.
A mouseover over the thumbnail cover gives you a sketchy summary. You can download the free audio books as a ZIP file, play it in the browser, or check it out as a readable eBook. Clicking on a title takes you to the Audible or LibriVox website.

Do you have any other free audio book site to add to the list? Personally, I have found audio books to be the best way to beat traffic jams. What about you?

I just wanted to offer an opinion about LearnOutLoud.com. I have been trying it, off and on, for years. I find that about 75% of it is PAID material, and among the freebies, there is not much useful. Much of the freebies consist of the first chapter of a narration that they sell, or the first lecture of a series that they sell, and much of the other stuff is either outdated or items of little appeal, such as perhaps the 9/11 report, or Clinton's speech given about some insignificant event. Every time I try the site, I wish I hadn't.
All the other sites that you named may be very good. Thought Audio's narrations are simply wonderful, but the selection is rather limited.
You may wish to add to your list EJUNTO.ORG for a few political and philosohical narrations, equally well done.
Thanks again, my friend.

AudioforBooks.com offers a growing library of free audiobooks for its members. Membership is free and there are other benefits for subscribers. I think you have summarized the benefits of audiobooks very well in the first paragraph of this page.
It's the quality of the narration that projects the scene of the story into the mind of the listener that makes a great audio book. This is often borne out by listening to the same book, read by a different narrator.
Recording an audiobook is no simple task and does require certain skills by the narrator, an analogy I sometimes use to explain this is, most people can sing! But not everyone can do it really well.
